Book Description (Courtesy of Goodreads):

Before Josh and Jordan Bell were streaking up and down the court, their father was learning his own moves. In this prequel to Newbery Medal winner The Crossover, Chuck Bell takes center stage, as readers get a glimpse of his childhood and how he became the jazz music worshipping, basketball star his sons look up to.

My Thoughts:

I am a fan of The Crossover, so I was really looking forward to this prequel. It did not disappoint.  In fact, it is possible that it might be even better that The Crossover – and that is saying something!  Kwame Alexander is the master of writing in verse, and, as he always does, he made every single word, every single line, ever single page count. He added some additional interest with some pages of comics interspersed here and there. The plot is completely engaging from beginning to end (I could not put it down), and the characters are truly unique and memorable. I loved every single one. Considering it was over 400 pages long, it was an amazingly fast read, but one that will stay in your heart long after you turned the last page.
